A journey through South East Asia
Welcome to my Southeast Asia journey and some of it’s destinations in the Asian mainland, namely Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. Whether you’re about to embark on a year long backpacking trip, a week-long package tour, or anything in between I hope the following information is of some help.
Nha Thrang is a popular beach destination
Southeast Asia is a subregion of Asia, consisting of the countries that are geographically south of China, east of India and north of Australia. The region lies on the intersection of geological plates, with heavy seismic and volcanic activity.
Southeast Asia consists of two geographic regions: the Asian mainland, and island arcs and archipelagoes to the east and southeast. The mainland section consists of Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam and Peninsular Malaysia while the maritime section consists of Andaman and Nicobar Islands (India), Brunei, East Malaysia, East Timor, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, The Philippines and Singapore.
Southeast Asia is always hot and humid. The mainland countries, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam share similar weather patterns. The ‘cool’ season from December to February, are the peak months for tourists. The ‘hot’ season from March to May. The monsoons last from June to October, bringing sudden torrential downpours for an hour or two every day, which are suddenly followed by sunshine. In Laos and Cambodia, travel can be disrupted by flooded roads during the monsoon season.
